Best Practices For Creating And Publishing Images

Image Optimization Is Important For Search Engine Optimization

Image optimization is very important to the search engine optimization of your website.  There are three widely used file formats for images: jpg and jpeg, png, gif.  Make every effort to choose the appropriate file format for images.

Jpg and jpeg are the most widely used.  The two advantages to using this image file format are that it keeps file sizes small and it is the most widely supported image file format.  The disadvantage is that it uses data compression which lessens the image quality.  Also, there is no transparent background as there is with png and gif image file formats.

Png image file format has transparent image background, better colour range and quality.  However, a png image file will not convert to a jpg and jpeg file format.

Gif is a bitmap image file format used for animations and art work.  It has a limited colour range and so, it is not recommended for photographs. It is highly recommended for logos and banners because it has a small file size and it has transparent background.

Optimize your banners, photographs and animations appropriately.  Use the correct image file format for the right image.  The goal is to reduce the image file size without sacrificing the quality of the image. Images must be sharp, clear and lightweight to facilitate optimum search engine optimization of your website.

Use free online png and jpeg compression tools to optimize the images on your website such as http://compressjpeg.com

Use free online photo editor  http://befunky.com to edit images and design banners to save to your computer using JPG or PNG image file format.

Use standardized banner sizes to create your banners.  The most widely accepted banner sizes for traffic exchange sites are 468x60, 728x90 and 125x125.  The following is a list of banner sizes accepted on pay per click advertising networks:  240x400, 320x50, 250x250, 200x200, 336x280, 300x250, 120x600, 160x600, 300x600 and 970x90.  The square 250x250 and the oblong rectangle 300x600 standardized banner sizes are much easier to use when creating banners for PPC advertising.

SEO The URL For Banners And Images Using Hyphen Rather Than Underscore To Separate Words

Use a hyphen (for-example-this-is-a hyphen) to separate words in banner and image urls which search engines recognize as word separators. Don't use an underscore (this_is_an_underscore) because search engines considers them to be word joiners; for example, pink_elephant is understood by search engines as 'pinkelephant'.  And above all, never mash all the words together to form one long url; as in the example, sexylingeriebrapantyset.jpg .

Good Image Alt Text Boosts Traffic To Your Website

The image alt text is very important to search engine optimization.  Alt text is an abbreviation of the phrase 'alternative text'.  It is the highlighted text that appears over an image when you hover over an image with the mouse cursor.  The alt text is a written description of the image.  It is important to search engines because it helps them understand what the image is about, why the image is relevant to the context of your web page, and how the image serves a purpose. To paraphrase, the alt text is the 'image identity tag' because it describes the content of the image. The word count is no more than 15 words.

Well-written alt texts for images can boost traffic to your website.  Search engines need this useful information about the subject matter of the image to determine the best image to deliver to a user's search query. The alt text is a description of the contents of the image.  Keep it simple, concise and short.  Don't just include a series of keywords; or add too many keywords because search engine may perceive your site as spam.  The description should provide useful and informative content and the keywords should be incorporated into the context of the description.  In the example below, the alt text (img alt=), filename (.png), and  long description (longdesc=) have been optimized using keywords in the context of the alt text description.

<img alt="eMoney Biz Generate Income" height="90" src="emoney-biz-online-income.png" width="728" longdesc="Earn money with paid to click, revenue share, affiliate marketing." class="auto-style3" />

Give detailed and informative filenames (.jpg .jpeg .png .gif) to your images so that search engines understand the subject matter of the image. Make the filename a good description of the image content.  For example, emoney-biz-generate-income.png is much better than emoney-biz-banner468.png; or b001-468x60.jpg

Hover over the image and double left-click the mouse to select Picture Properties to complete the alt text and long description sections.

Re-Size Images Using a Photo Editor

Use a photo editor to edit image size rather than temporarily adjusting the image size in the Picture Properties. Scale the image to the size you want so as to optimize search engine traffic to your website and improve the website loading speed.  Avoid using over-sized images that also slow down website download speed.

Use the Split screen browser mode to edit html.  The images should include width and height in the html.   For example,  <img alt="eMoney Biz Generate Income" height="90" src="emoney-biz-online-income.png" width="728" longdesc="Earn money with paid to click, revenue share, affiliate marketing." class="auto-style3" />

Strategically Place Images Near Relevant Information

Don't embed important text such as page headings and menu items inside images.  This relevant information should be written in the html to optimize the context for the image.

Search engines interpret or perceive a group of images or banners that stand alone on a web page with no written context to be spam.  It's just a group of pictures open to anyone's interpretation because they are not accompanied by relevant written content. Provide a context for your images.  The best way to highly optimize the context is to create content-rich stand alone page that has useful and important information optimized with keywords, keyword phrases and keyword long descriptions.

At the very least, optimize images by using captions or anchor text.  Anchor text is the 'written description of a link's destination'. For example, a Traffic Downline Builder advertising manual and viral traffic exchange sites is the destination link for the anchor text Drive Free Traffic To Your Website.

Strategically place images at the top or in the top half of the page to ensure an immediate view by all visitors to your website.

Create high definition good quality sharp images.  Good quality images strategically located in the top half of the web page and next or near to useful and relevant information which is highly descriptive and incorporates keywords, keyword phrases and keyword descriptions help search engines understand what the image is about, why it is important and how it is useful. Otherwise, the search engine considers it is useless information; and worse, it may be considered spam.  In either case, search engines will not direct free traffic to your website.  Properly optimized images can boost traffic to your website.
